The Spyglass

For my third object I decided to go for a spyglass (also known as hand-held telescope). For this object I collected images of the internet to make the net (all of which are not pictures of renders but real photographs). This first one was taken off eBay:

This image was used for the top/side of the model:

Unfortunately this eBay listing did not contain front and back views of the spyglass so I had to look elsewhere. I picked pictures of spyglasses that looked almost identical to the eBay listing one:

These two spyglasses are probably more modern than the eBay one but they should follow a similar design for the back and front. Observing these pictures allowed me to design the front and back of the spyglass:

Making leather

Using a couple of effects in Photoshop such as add noise I tried to create a leather texture. However, there is distortion on this box probably from its conversion to smooth mode. There are a number of ways to solve this problem, but I need to think about that:

Bump mapping

I added an extra part to my box (the other part of the lock) and then tried out some bump mapping test to see what texture I'm looking for. This box is made of a leather and has a gold (or other gold coloured metal) lock, and i want the leather trexture to look slightly 3D. Here are some bump mapping tests I did using Maya's default textures:

Maya's default texture - leather

Maya's default texture - Mountain

Improving the latch

I felt the latch on the box was still looking too rounded so i added more 'polySplitRing' attributes in order to make it more straight in smooth mode:

Simple colouring

Here I have tectured my objects with just block colour to see how the colour scheme is going to work. Obviously the textures will be developed and look my life-like:

Texture testing

For this test I cloned the leather from the box on Photoshop onto the UV snapshot. Its works quite well baring in mind the UV map isn't connected well for this perspective view:
